The inspiration for this painting was taken from the Rider-Waite Tarot ‘The Fool’ and ‘The Empress’ cards. The wheat in the character’s hand symbolizes fertility and prosperity. The moon is a feminine symbol which embodies the cyclical nature of life. It is in the position of the head, which in many cultures is seen as the seat of wisdom and knowledge. In terms of chakras, it corresponds with the crown and third eye. Taken together, the character is being led by her feminine instincts, and in harmony with the natural cycles of life. The waterfall symbolizes perpetual refreshment and energy, as well as a “permanent impermanence”. The tree that bears golden fruit is a reference not only to the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden but in The Magician’s Nephew, by C.S. Lewis. The heavy use of gold in this piece is to borrow gold’s meaning of illumination, love, compassion, courage, passion, magic, and wisdom. The text in this piece is taken again from C.S. Lewis, this time from The Silver Chair. The character’s lack of feet symbolize that while all other symbolize suggest that she is full of knowledge, feminine and mystical, practically she does not know where to step next. Taken together, this reflects a period in time where I was gaining a large amount of knowledge but was at an impasse as to how to integrate that knowledge in practical terms.

I painted the underpainting of this in one of my favorite spots in Central Park, then took inspiration from Georges Seurat and added as many dots as humanly possible.

I drew inspiration from an illustrated book on anatomy, thinking of the links between the involuntary processes of photosynthesis and breathing.
